24 Dec 3 Awesome Summertime Breastfeeding Tips (You’ll Thank Us Later)
Summertime breastfeeding can be a rather uncomfortable situation, especially with SA’s scorcher climate! However, there are ways to work around the summer sunshine and keep your cool whilst feeding your baby. Here are our top tips for summertime breastfeeding. Read on below now for more!
Be Cool By The Pool
One of the best thing about summer is the chance to relax pool side. If you are lucky enough to have a pool of your own, or live in a complex with one, why not take a dip before a feed? The beast time to breastfeed is when both mom and baby are relaxed. This can be incredibly tricky if you are both burning up a little. So, take a quick dip in the pool before feeding time, and you will be good to go! This will also give you some amazing skin to skin cuddle time with your little one, so it really is a win win situation. Keep in mind though, it is NOT a clever idea to breastfeed in the pool. As tempting as it may be, avoid it at all costs as professionals do not recommend it.
A Summertime Breastfeeding Tip Just For The Moms
This one is just for you mama bears out there. The most important tip for summer breastfeeding is to ensure you keep yourself hydrated. You should always keep a bottle of water close by when feeding your baby, but it is extra important to keep yourself constantly hydrated in the warmer months to avoid dehydration. You don’t need to worry about giving your baby water if they are still completely dependent on breastfeeding. He or she will get all the fluids they need to stay healthy as long as you keep yourself hydrated.
Always Be Prepared
In South Africa, summer often means holiday time. As such, you will probably be on the move. Therefore, be sure to make a list of all of the essentials you will need for your travels. Ensure that you have nursing clothes – luckily the free flowing dresses and blouses of summertime offer moms easy breastfeeding – make sure you and your baby have hats and above all, ensure there is plenty of sunscreen to go around. Be sure to dress as comfortably as possible. As mentioned before, you will already be slightly irked by the hot weather, so help yourself and your little one be as comfortable as possible by means of what you wear.
